Three reasons why ‘Shrek the Third’ is terrible

May 20, 2007

Shrek the Third

One: It’s preachy. There’s a clear desire to spread the gospel of “find out who you are” “don’t follow stereotypes” “be who you want to be” etc etc etc. Actually the plot is not bad, but this third movie fails to do what the second movie achieved, made the audience care.

Two: It’s loud. The humour is not subtle. For those who’re going, “Well duh, it’s a Shrek movie.” Problem is that it really is comic for comic sake. Like an Adam Sandler movie doing gross out after gross out scene. It’s bound to get tiresome. This one really is. For instance, the character of donkey needs the characters of the children for a laugh and there are so many, hence no chance of getting to know them, no character possibilities… only they go around zipping, being pests, and cuddly, and all this is supposed to be funny and cute.

Three: It lacks characterisation! Continuing from the previous point, in terms of characterisation, the real character standout is Prince Charming, we finally get to know him a little better, we understand him… but only a little. The rest of the characters are just filling the screen doing their stereotypes. We don’t get to know the princesses, we don’t get to know Fiona further, we don’t even get to know Shrek further. They did try to make Shrek *spoiler warning ahead* grow in terms of wanting to have a child, but even this transition is stereotypical and lacks depth. *spoiler ended*

I was actually bored while watching the movie and glad that it ended. Some scenes make you smirk, one or two shots make you laugh, but on the whole, the movie grates the senses.

Saw it last night, and I especially agree with #3. No character development at all. The only two new characters were Arthur and Merlin and they had relatively little going on.

    Thumbs down.

It was defiantly a big disappointment among the three-quels this summer. Prince Charming really doesn’t make a good villain. You know he’s no threatening.

this movie is entirely laugh out loud funny with some amazingly clever scenes in the background (univ. students smoking pot come to mind) and some ppl love these type of movies as my whole family enjoyed and hated to see the credits come up
